What Can An Ordinary Person Do to Fight Human Trafficking?

Human trafficking is a large-scale, global crime that affects 27.6 million women, children, and men worldwide. Of those victims, 6.3 million are victims of sex trafficking (International Labour Organization, 2022). This crime is widespread, sophisticated, and organized—so what can an ordinary person do to fight against trafficking?

Every day, organizations around the world fight to end this horrific crime. Atlas Free aims to unite everyday people with these local efforts to dismantle the business of sex trafficking together. The scale of human trafficking is daunting, but the solution lies in the actions of individuals around the world, choosing to show up and fight for freedom.

That’s what it takes to disrupt a $236 billion industry (International Labour Organization, 2024): collective impact. But there’s no collective without the courageous individuals who step out and stand up for what’s right.

Whether you aim to work alongside like-minded individuals or just want to support the fight on your own, there’s plenty you can do to join the fight.

1. Learn the Basics About Human Trafficking

The first step toward understanding the scope and scale of human trafficking is to learn the basics about this crime and how traffickers operate. We’ve created helpful resources for you to learn more. Here’s where to start:

2. Listen to Survivors’ Stories

Hearing stories from survivors is a good way to understand what trafficking looks like, what victims endure, and how traffickers trap their victims. Experiencing their stories from their perspective will help you gain a broader understanding of how multifaceted trafficking really is. Some recent survivor stories include:

3. Donate to an Anti-Trafficking Nonprofit

Supporting an anti-trafficking nonprofit is the most impactful way to join the fight and create a powerful collective impact. That’s the purpose of the Atlas Free Network: reaching across the globe to equip Network Members with the resources they need to save lives and restore hope.

Giving to Atlas Free is easy. You can choose a one-time donation or join Team Freedom to give on a monthly basis. If you love purchasing gifts for a cause, you can also shop our online store for merch and our new children’s book, The Knight. Proceeds from each sale go directly to furthering our mission.

4. Attend or Host a Fundraiser

Fundraisers are a wonderful way to raise money for a cause. In this case, you’re bringing your community together to fight against human trafficking, raising awareness of this crime in the process.

At Atlas Free, we love fundraisers that celebrate activities you love—whether in the mountains, on the road, or in the water. Learn more about organizing Atlas Free fundraisers, or join a Freedom Hike.
