The Knight: Give the Gift of Freedom on National Children’s Book Day

April 18 is National Children’s Book Day 2026. Celebrate your child’s love of books—and give the gift of freedom—with The Knight, a groundbreaking children’s book that helps families start conversations about the injustices of human trafficking.

Through the metaphorical story of a brave warrior facing down a fearsome dragon, The Knight brings the fight against human trafficking to storytime. This unique book is the first of its kind: a richly-illustrated story about noble knights and deceitful dragons that offers children an imaginative, kid-friendly introduction to the central themes of exploitation.

Explaining the Harsh Reality of Exploitation Through Metaphorical Storytelling

Human trafficking is a heavy, frightening topic for everyone, especially children. When the Atlas Free community requested help with explaining this dark reality to their children, we realized there were few educational resources available to help. That’s how The Knight was born.

Atlas Free wanted to create a story that revealed the realities of cruelty and coercion in the world through a fictional lens. Human trafficking is an industry operating in the shadows. Traffickers thrive when they can deceive and devalue their fellow human beings; the most powerful counterattacks are awareness, compassion, and collaboration. The book aims to balance difficult truths with the knowledge—and hope—that evil can be defeated.

Though it’s wrapped in fantastical imagery and patterned after classical fairy tales, The Knight is so much more. It’s a story that represents the harrowing journeys—and very real courage—of the women, children, and men who endure human trafficking. More than that, this story spotlights the profound power of a community working together to make a difference in survivors’ lives.

How to Share The Knight with Children and Students

The Knight was created with elementary-aged children in mind, with its bright illustrations, fantasy creatures, and fairy-tale structure. It’s appropriate for all ages, and focuses on the power every individual has to bring light into the darkest places and circumstances.

The book is perfect for families, educators, and faith communities who want to take National Children’s Book Day to the next level, incorporating and supporting a worthy cause through the love of reading. Proceeds from every purchase support the global Atlas Free Network of organizations fighting human trafficking and providing survivor care.

The Knight was written with care, in such a way that parents can choose how deeply they want to discuss its themes of exploitation and trafficking. Its dragon imagery may be intense for the youngest readers, so we recommend parental discretion. In the back of the book, you’ll find age-appropriate pages with information about exploitation in the world.

The Knight Adventure Box: Bringing National Children’s Book Day Activities to Life

The Knight Adventure Box is the perfect companion to the book—and a fantastic way to incorporate National Children’s Book Day activities into your home or classroom.

This limited-edition box includes a hardcover copy of The Knight, a coloring page, bookmark, sticker pack, flashlight, and cardboard sword and shield to inspire imaginative play. Even better, every Adventure Box purchased supports the Atlas Free Network.

Play and imagination can spark meaningful conversations about bravery, truth, standing up for what’s right, and helping others. Talk about the book’s metaphors and what each character represents:

  • The knight represents victims and survivors of exploitation. Women, children, and men from all backgrounds suffer at the hands of traffickers worldwide. To survive and escape, they must embody the courage, perseverance, and resilience of a knight.
  • The firefly represents you: someone with an open heart, who’s willing to bring their light to the ongoing fight against exploitation. Fireflies bring a hopeful spark to an otherwise dark world. In The Knight, the firefly is a reminder that no one fights alone.
  • The dragon is a symbolic representation of exploiters, traffickers, and the hidden industry that profits off innocent victims in excess of $236 billion*. It embodies the terror, control, coercion, and abuse that keep survivors trapped.

National Children’s Book Day Ideas for Teens

To deepen the story of The Knight for teens and adults, incorporate the short film that inspired the book. The film debuted at the 2024 Freedom Gala. It leans on the same metaphors: dragons that represent traffickers, fireflies that signify donors, advocates, and frontline workers, and a courageous knight as the face of the survivor.

We recommend The Knight film for viewers ages 13 and up. It contains depictions of human trafficking not suitable for young audiences. For the best experience, expand the video player to full screen. View the film here.

Inspire Hope and Support Freedom, One Book at a Time

Turning the pages of The Knight is your first step on a greater journey. Each purchase supports the Atlas Free Network’s anti-trafficking efforts around the world. Your gift can provide survivors with a safe place to live, a comfortable bed, and the care their traffickers withheld. Share the book, the film, and Atlas Free’s mission to spread the word.

Make National Children’s Book Day 2026 a day to spark conversations about compassion, courage, and justice, inspiring the next generation to continue the fight against exploitation. Order your copy of The Knight here
